About the role:
We are looking for a Plumbing & Gas Fitting Tutor to provide effective, student-centered tuition, delivering our NZQA level 3 Certificate in Plumbing and Gas Fitting, along with supporting, inspiring and motivating our students to complete their course and achieve their goals for further study or employment.

This is a full-time, permanent role and we are looking to fill this position as soon as possible. 

About you:
You understand what it takes to be successful in the trades industry and you love and excel at teaching and motivating students in a multicultural environment. You have taught either in the workplace or in an education environment, and ideally you will have a relevant tertiary qualification. You are innovative, inspiring and committed to supporting your learners to achieve exceptional results and realize their goals and dreams.

What you need to have:
• Up to date registration with the NZ Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board (essential)
• A recognised National Certificate in Plumbing and Gas Fitting (Level 4) qualification plus relevant teaching qualifications are desirable, but not essential
• You have a strong working knowledge right across the Plumbing and Gas Fitting industry including knowledge of current regulatory and industry requirements
• You love and excel at teaching and motivating people in a multicultural environment (you have taught either in the workplace or in an education environment)
• Strong classroom management skills
• An enthusiastic team player – collaborative, constructive and supportive of other team members and team results
• High level of interpersonal, communication and presentation skills.

The role of a Tutor is a rewarding teaching position, combining the provision of quality tutoring that is in line with programme requirements, the establishment and management of an effective learning environment, the development of teaching resources, and the provision of student support where this is required.  

Tutors role-model possibility and success to students– and inspire students to strive to be the very best that they can be.  

Key Accountabilities:

Tuition & Marking:  
  • Provide effective, compelling and dynamic student-centred tuition in the relevant teaching discipline to the standards required for the course
  • Create and maintain an environment which supports and enhances learning and skill development
  • Ensure students are ‘Work Ready’ -  knowledge/ technical skills together with motivation, attitude, communication skills, time management, personal presentation and self-confidence – Incorporate and embed strategies to develop these into your day to day teaching
  • Be involved in the preparation of assessment and teaching materials as required
  • Keep up to date with developments in your own specialised areas of tuition and related developments in industry.  Maintain networks with the purpose of inviting contacts into class as guest speakers.
  • Mark all formative and summative work submitted by students, in accordance with NZMA policy, and return this work to students within seven working days
  • Organise guest speakers for classes at least once every five weeks
  • Organise off site class activities/ site visits at least once every five weeks
  • Embed literacy and numeracy activities into programme delivery
  • Ensure lesson plans and five weekly plans are written as scheduled and to the required level
Student Support:  
  • Act as a role model for students - specifically behaviour, conduct, appearance, attitude, personal presentation and level of professionalism are of a standard generally acceptable in a professional vocational learning environment
  • Act as an ambassador for NZMA at all times and perform the duties of the position in accordance with the organisation’s core values
  • Apply the NZMA student rules and campus rules equally to all students to ensure fairness and consistency
Academic and Student Administration:  
  • Maintain full and complete student records in accordance with NZMA policy, ensuring they meet requirements of NZQA, funding providers, current privacy and freedom of information legislation
  • Follow up on student absences, as required
  • Ensure that all preparation and tasks related to internal and external moderation process are completed in time and to the required specification
  • Prepare and complete all Individual Learning Plans (ILPs), student progress reports and tutor dashboards on time and to the required levels
  • Accurate class attendance to be recorded daily, with a record of all communication relating to absences recorded on CRM
Team Contribution:
  • Proactively contribute to and support the effective operation of the teaching model in place across the teaching team
  • Undertake all responsibilities in alignment with the core values of Quality, Innovation, Respect, Passion and Integrity
  • Undertake all responsibilities associated with your own class, as outlined within this document
  • Undertake allocated support tasks as required, for any additional classes you are supporting as part of the teaching model in place
  • Support responsibilities that may be allocated include, but may not be limited to; class-room delivery, assessment marking, absence follow-up, individual student support, resource development, organising field trips and guest speakers, creating ILPs, uniform allocation.
  What success looks like:  
  • Engaged students, with successful learning outcomes
  • Achieve unit completion as per requirements on e-tracker
  • Achieve strong EPI and attendance results, in line with the targets set on the tutor dashboard
  • Meets all programme requirements
  • Achieve positive results on moderation events
  • Achieve positive results on student evaluations
  • Receive positive results on tutor observation feedback events
What you need to be and have:    
  • An enthusiastic team player – collaborative, constructive and supportive of other team members and team results
  • Extensive experience within a role related to the teaching discipline, including a supervisory or managerial role for at least 12 months during this time
  • A relevant tertiary qualification – at a minimum of level 4 or above, or the ability to achieve this through recognition of prior learning
  • Group training or teaching experience in a multi-cultural environment, and the ability to work with others who do not have English as a first language
  • Preferably education qualifications at level 4 or above and/or the ability to achieve units 4098, 11551, 11552 and 7091, NCALNE and NCAET
  • A strong drive to develop others, and prepare them to achieve and be successful
  • Demonstrated commitment to represent and be a strong advocate for students
  • High level of interpersonal, communication and presentation skills.
